Search engines vary greatly in what they want as far as coding for your website. This is why it is important to have a professional design and submit the website for you. Below is a list of some of the top engines and the time to expect before your site is listed with them. Because of the number of requests they receive each day, some of the engines can take weeks to list a site. Another important reason to have a Maintenance Plan to ensure that your website is listed.
- AltaVista Usually lists within 4-6 weeks. Also offers a paid Express Service
- Google Expect to be listed within 4 -6 weeks. The Google S.E. Spider is very active, and this is an excellent engine.
If you want immediate listings, don't forget about their AdWords program. You can get started for a minimal fee.
- Yahoo For free submission to this directory, 2 days to 1 month to never. The most popular search tool on the web is also the most difficult to get listed in.
For faster service, go with their Express Submit service which guarantees a review of your site within 48 hours.

- Lycos Takes anywhere from 6 - 9 weeks.
- Excite 10-12 weeks or possibly longer. One of the slower search engines on the Internet
- MSN Expect 6 - 8 weeks to be listed
- AOL 2 weeks to several months
- LookSmart Now a PPC Service. For $150 deposit and .15 per click minimum. Editor will review your site within 48 hours for the express plan.
- Direct Hit Having a fairly good response rate, you should show up in searches within Direct Hit in two weeks.
- Hot Bot Usually lists within 6-8 weeks, but you may have to resubmit. Hot Bot drops pages if you do not get a significant amount of click-thrus after they list you.
